Kanonkop is generally considered as a South African First Growth. Kanonkop produces top wines, which are amongst the best of the world. Their Bordeaux style blend, Paul Sauer, was the first non-French wine to win the very prestigious “Trophée Pichon-Longueville, comtesse de Lalande” award at the IWSC. That happened to the 1991 vintage. Since then also the 1995, 2003 and 2010 vintage won the award.
Kanonkop was and still is one of the most important promotors of the Pinotage grape. It was the first estate to commercially plant this new grape and now, their vineyards are among the oldest in South Africa.
